weekend potpourri: gee whiz!

Something that I'm seeing a lot, and I'm liking a lot, are porch ceilings that are painted a noticeably different color than the rest of the house. The houses that I've been admiring have a steep set of stairs leading up to the front porch and are very close to the sidewalk. This puts me in the perfect position to look like a creeper, standing outside of someone's lovely home and taking pictures of their porch ceiling.
Everything was looking cool, green, blue and calm last night on our walk after dinner.
Today we drove to Olde Towne Portsmouth instead of taking the ferry; I was taking too long to get ready, and there are lots of festivities going on downtown, so we imagined that parking near the dock was probably going to be a nightmare. I needed to be in Portsmouth this morning because I have been CRAVING a good hunt-and-gather, my mind has been rehearsing my best haggling tactics, and my fingers have been itching to pick up some treasures. And I was hoping hoping hoping that this antique fair wouldn't be a huge letdown like all the rest that I have tried since rolling into town a few months ago.

It was so worth it; I found almost too many good things! I haggled on all but two items, and that was because when I asked the price, both of the items were at least $5 less than I was expecting them to be. I don't know why, but that situation always makes me feel sad for the seller; like I want to give them the higher price that I had been expecting. Want to, but don't. I'm going to take pictures of my loot tomorrow; the perfect way to celebrate the 4th 5th... totally spaced and forgot what day it is!

(Craig found this sad/funny framed print. We think it is a young single mother with a ginormous crying baby and a shaky grasp of the English language. What do you think?)

Oh, and that marquee is the Commodor theatre in Portsmouth. We haven't been yet, but we've heard that it is a fun thing to do. I'm intrigued by the idea of going to the movies, sitting at a table and placing orders by phone from your seat. I'll report back about the experience should I go anytime soon.

A lot of the old houses in Charleston have porch ceilings painted that same blue color. I heard it is an old tradition/superstition that painting the porch ceiling sky blue keeps the ghosts out of the house. Not sure if it works, but it is quite pretty.

I've heard that the traditional color is blue, too, and a Southern US tradition, but I've seen some in the Northeast, too. Ghosts don't like blue?

Interesting...

Ghosts or no ghosts, I sure like it! I would think that it would make sitting out there in the hot summer seem a little cooler.

Same here in the West (via Mexico). I have also heard it keeps the flies out of the house. My current house doesn't have a porch overhang, but I painted the overhang on my last house. Sky blue!

Painting the porch ceiling blue is actually to keep birds from nesting. The color is supposed to confuse them into thinking it's the sky.

Thanks, Allison! That seems to make sense, and it must work if so many people do it.
